Our Approach: Research

Overview

INI's major educational goals are:

  • to convert theory into practical skills and institutional processes;
  • to develop and disseminate written materials such as books, articles, and curricula;
  • to provide training opportunities, including seminars, conferences, and university-based courses; and
  • to spread ideas broadly through an international network of grassroots and institutional leaders.

Education Projects

Government Training. INI trains government officials and representatives of civil society involved in highstakes conflict in the Middle East, the former Yugoslavia, China, and elsewhere.

INI/Harvard Medical School Internship Program. INI has developed an "INI Conflict Management Track" to the "Physicians in Community" Program at Harvard Medical School. In the program, first year medical students develop a summer internship project either domestically or internationally. INI's track assists those students who wish to pursue conflict management work as their internship project. The INI Conflict Management Track consists of the INI Seminar Series described above, additional training on negotiation, recommended reading, and faculty mentoring. Students from HMS are pursuing summer internships in conflict management in Africa, the Middle East, China, and India.

Educational Resources. INI faculty and staff are developing resources to help professors and trainers teach students how to use emotions constructively during a negotiation or conflict. Click here to access these materials, which are based on the ideas in Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate.

INI Seminar Series on the Psychology of Conflict Management. INI has established a seminar series on the Psychology of Conflict Management that involves distinguished practitioners and scholars in the field, as well as students from the Harvard Medical School and Law School who will be working in conflict management internships over the summer. The purpose of the seminar series is to explore the psychology of conflict management in order to equip students with skills and understandings to improve their decision-making while working in the field on various types of interventions.Click here to learn more or go back to projects.

Academic courses. INI faculty offer courses and lectures to students at Harvard and other universities, as well as to the general public, educating them about the multiple factors involved in conflict management. INI Director Daniel Shapiro offers a course at Harvard Law School on how to use emotions constructively during a negotiation. A focus is on the use of emotions to improve relationships and cooperation between individuals and groups.Go back to projects.

Senior Executive Seminar: Dealing with Emotions in Negotiation. Daniel Shapiro, Director of INI, and Jamil Mahuad, former President of Ecuador, are currently constructing a seminar for business and policy leaders to help them deal more effectively with the emotional dimension of negotiation.Go back to projects.
